Red Stitch asked renowned designer Floris Hovers to create his interpretation of a sofa. His approach turned out to be by no means conventional. Unlike most designers Floris doesn’t start with sketches on paper. His ideas sprout best when his hands build the shapes that comes in his mind using all kinds of material that is available in his workshop.

The great thing about Floris' approach is that you can actually hold the design in your hands and look at it from every possible angle.

Floris noticed that most sofas are created from a traditional perspective, i.e. fully covering a metal or wooden frame with upholstery fabric.
Releasing this classic idea opened up a new world of creative options. The frame becomes an esthetic element of the design. By using colorization the frame can bring exiting contrast to the upholstery or smooth ton sur ton gradients.
Floris tried different ways to add softness and comfort by stitching cleaning cloth and make filling of cotton wool to complete his miniature prototype.
Floris constructed the sofa in such a way that one can easily change the look of the sofa by sliding a new set of cushions in a different color on the sofa. No hassle of taking it to a reupholsterer. Just order a new set of cushions and change the old ones. You can even recolor the frame. Both handy and sustainable, because it will extend its life cycle in a practical way.
Ugly colors don't exist. It is all about composition. Just like music. A color really starts to blossom in relation to another color.
Color is at least as important as form. According to Floris they go hand in hand. It's the composition that makes a great design. For the Float collection Floris selected the color palette that Arne Jacobson used when designing the Royal SAS Hotel in Copenhagen. The iconic green and blue tones are soft and timeless like nature. The upholstery fabric is made from 100% pure new wool by Danish Art Weaving from the north of Denmark.
A purchase is only one mouseclick away. We believe that decreasing ecologic footprint will be achieved most effectively by slowing down our consumption rate. Buying sustainable products with a long lifespan, both quality and design-wise will slowdown the consumption cycle. In other words: buy less and better.
